Sustainability & Green Tourism
AIM
We are committed to working and operating our small business sustainably. Our remote location in an area of multiple indicators of social economic deprivation and fragile local eco-system presents particularly challenges which need to be carefully addressed. Investment as a seasonal hotel has to be balanced with longer pay back timescales. Employment practices with a seasonal team who “live in” have to be adapted to our circumstances. Nonetheless our ambition is to become an upper quartile tourism accommodation provider for sustainability by 2028.
The Story SO FAR
.Since taking over the Eddrachilles Hotel in 2016 we have embarked on a steady programme of conservation, improvement, and refurbishment of the hotel. which is in a listed building, and the associated buildings on the campus. We are also undertaking a 10-year recovery plan of the 3 acres of hotel grounds, taking them from a mono-culture Sitka spruce abandoned plantation to a bio-diverse and environmentally sustainable, guest-garden amenity.
Based in an area with multiple indicators of socio-economic deprivation we have a particular focus on green economics including sustainable employment practices, e.g.in 2018 we were one of the first three hotels in Scotland to be fully accredited by the Living Wage Foundation.
Eddrachilles Hotel is currently working with Green Tourism with the aim of being assessed in 2026 for an entry level Green Tourism Award. Green Tourism is a rigorous certification programme independently validated by the International Centre for Responsible Tourism.
