Bookshops & Quiet Corners

Slow days, good books, coastal views.
Whether you’re planning a rainy-day outing or just love to browse bookshops on holiday, these three independent Highland bookshops are all within an hour of Eddrachilles — perfect for a gentle, creative day trip.

Lochinver Bookshop (40 mins)

The most north-westerly bookshop on the UK mainland: a welcoming, well-curated independent with Highland history, nature writing, fiction and children’s books. Ideal to pair with a sea safari boat tour with North Coast Sea Tours from Lochinver’s harbour or a visit to the workshop (and shop) of Highland Stoneware.
Best for: a quiet browse, gifts, local titles.

Ullapool Bookshop (an hour)

A classic indie on Quay Street with Scottish fiction, walking guides, maps, calendars, cards, children books, photo books and nature titles. A favourite stop for NC500 travellers and readers looking for gifts. Helpful staff.
Best for: browsing after a visit to Ullapool Museum, a guided walking tour, or sea safari from Ullapool harbour or if waiting for the afternoon ferry to the Outer Hebrides. .

The Ceilidh Place Bookshop (an hour)

Part café, part cultural hub, part bookshop-with-rooms — a unique Ullapool stop where you can eat lunch or enjoy a coffee by the wood burning stove, then, browse shelves and linger over poetry or politics.
Best for: lunch + thought provoking books + atmosphere.

Make a Day of It

A bookshop visit pairs beautifully with:
• Lochinver beaches or Highland Stoneware
• A shore walk with Ullapool Tours + lunch at Seafood Shack
• A quiet afternoon reading back at the hotel.

We also keep a small collection for guests:
Recipe & food writing that inspires The Glebe Kitchen
Local guidebooks & natural heritage reference books for planning days out

- Poetry and literary favourites - for reflections
• A fiction swap shelf in the sun lounge — borrow or exchange a novel during your stay

There is also a Scrabble dictionary for inevitable exchanges over a board game! Or for those more peaceful in their pursuits, a crafting centre (new for 2026). Which takes us on to Art and Crafts.
